Name:

Dr Lironne Wein

Qualifications:

Medical Oncologist and Consultant Physician (MBBS BMedSci FRACP)

Where can we find you?

I work at Women’s Health Melbourne. I am a medical oncologist and physician with an interest in managing menopause.  I see women who want to manage their menopausal symptoms without hormones (due to a medical condition or personal preference) as well as women who want to explore using menopausal hormone therapy.

On instagram you can find me at @drlironnewein

Why do you love what you do?

I love being able to help women improve their quality of life by effectively managing their menopausal symptoms.  I love tailoring a plan to each patient based on their medical history, individual preferences and personal goals.

Why would someone come and see you?

Someone can see me to help manage their menopausal symptoms (eg hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood disturbance, vaginal dryness).  We can discuss the most appropriate ways to manage their symptoms based on their medical history, family history and priorities.  They can also see me to discuss optimisation of their health during menopause (including bone health, cardiovascular health and cancer screening).

When do you introduce the idea of lubricant with your patients?

I discuss lubricants and moisturisers as the foundation for managing many genitourinary symptoms women experience during menopause including vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse.  Unlike many other menopausal symptoms, vaginal dryness often gets worse rather than better over time so it’s important to manage it effectively.

What’s your favourite fact about the female body/people who have vulvas/menstruate?

Women see colour differently to men.  On average, women can perceive more colours.  An international study demonstrated that women are better able to distinguish between subtle graduations in colour.  This is most evident with yellows and greens, where women can distinguish tiny differences in hues.
