What do you love most about your job?
Witnessing someone get to hold their healthy baby after a rough path of trying to get pregnant truly never gets old, and knowing we had the opportunity to shape their future family’s health through diet from before that baby was even conceived. It never ceases to amaze me!
Why would someone come and see you?
Usually people come to see us at The Dietologist when they’re thinking about trying to conceive, are currently trying but haven’t conceived yet or are in the thick of fertility treatments. Couples and individuals who work with us are commonly navigating an array of reproductive health & general health concerns like PCOS, endometriosis, adenomyosis, thyroid diseases, hypothalamic amenorrhoea, low AMH, sperm quality concerns, weight related concerns, gut health problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), inflammatory or autoimmune conditions like Coeliac Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and more. They’re looking for a way to navigate the multiple dietary and lifestyle changes for their health concerns as well as when trying to conceive to enhance their chances of conception success and take back some of the control when it comes to trying for a baby. When do you introduce the idea of lubricant with your patients?
Usually when people ask about the frequency of intercourse, positions or painful sex this will come up in a conversation. Also, if there is a history of vaginal microbiome concerns, we will discuss choosing a lubricant that is right for them to support this and ensure everything is comfortable.
What’s your favourite fact about the female body?
That the ovary isn’t actually connected to the fallopian tube, the fimbriae of the fallopian tube “catches” the egg as it ovulates into free space. Which means if you lose a fallopian tube, the single tube can move to collect the egg from the other ovary if necessary – so cool!
