What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a common condition that many women develop over time.

Like many conditions it occurs on a spectrum from mild and asymptomatic to troublesome and requiring treatment.

Adenomyosis refers to a woman’s uterus becoming diffusely enlarged due to glandular tissue proliferating within the muscle layer (the myometrium).

Typical symptoms may include increased menstrual pain, heavier menstrual bleeding which can be extreme in some cases, and abdominal bloating/bulkiness due to uterine enlargement.

Surgical management of adenomyosis usually refers to having a hysterectomy (removal of the womb) but other conservative measures may be suitable and preferred by many people.

These include the use of hormonal therapies to control bleeding symptoms or endometrial ablation/uterine artery radiological embolisation if fertility is no longer desired.

Hormonal control of adenomyosis can be effective but can be associated with vaginal dryness.
