Your Vagina: Why does pH balance matter?

Maintaining a balanced pH level is one of the most important processes in the human body for ensuring good health.

And it is no different for your vagina.

The pH level – the measure of a substance's acidity – is a key marker of vaginal health.

And while the body overall is slightly alkaline, your vagina is meant to be acidic. Hovering at 3.8 to 4.5 on the scale of 0 to 14 – about as acidic as a glass of wine – this environment creates the perfect climate to host an army of friendly bacteria.

The main foot soldiers of your vaginal microbiome are lactobacilli. These bacteria produce lactic acid, which enables the female reproductive tract to be self-cleansing and self-protecting against infections.

When it comes to lubricants, in order to restore, enhance and optimise vaginal health, we must first respect the vagina’s pH as nature intended it to be - mildly acidic.

When the vagina’s pH becomes more alkaline, its natural defence is penetrated and nasties such as thrush and bacterial vaginosis can thrive.

The disrupted pH balance can cause irritation, discomfort and a fishy odour, which can be stressful and embarrassing.

This is why protecting pH balance has been a key concern in the development of each Ellechemy formula. Our lubricants are effective, targeted and woman-friendly. They will help you achieve your goals for greater pleasure, while working in harmony with your natural healthy vaginal flora.

If you have a tendency to suffer from recurrent thrush, bacterial vaginosis, recurrent herpes or chronic vaginal and vulval irritation, try our Equilibrium formula daily as a restorative treatment to find vaginal peace and balance, and of course to seek the pleasure you deserve.
